A semester-length introduction to the life, teachings, and early spread of Buddhism, approached through the lens of ancient Indian history and material culture. Students learn to read archaeological evidence — stūpas, viharas, inscriptions — alongside canonical accounts of the Buddha's life and the growth of the Sangha.
